Our Story

(Not His)

Hi, I'm Rod, the maker behind Wind Dancer.

I've worked with timber for more than 40 years.

My career began as a residential builder, where I developed a deep respect for quality materials, craftsmanship and the satisfaction that comes from creating something built to last. Throughout those years, one material always stood out to me, timber.

There is something special about working with wood. Every piece is different. Every grain pattern, colour variation and natural feature tells its own story. Even after all these years, I still get excited when I uncover the hidden beauty within a piece of Australian hardwood.

Like many people, COVID changed the direction of my working life. As building work slowed, it gave me the opportunity to turn a lifelong passion into something more. Rather than seeing it as a setback, I saw it as an opportunity to spend more time doing something I genuinely love.

That was the beginning of Wind Dancer.

The name Wind Dancer came from watching trees do what they have always done – move gracefully and elegantly in the wind. Slow, timeless and full of character, they stand strong while adapting to the seasons around them. To me, that perfectly reflects both the beauty of timber and the journey that led to Wind Dancer.

Australian hardwood has always fascinated me. It is hard, tough and incredibly beautiful. Species such as Spotted Gum, Jarrah and Ironbark possess a natural character that simply cannot be replicated. No two pieces are ever exactly the same, and that's one of the things I love most about working with them.

I still spend countless hours in my shed selecting timber, machining, sanding and finishing every board by hand. Some people might call it work, but to me it is something I genuinely enjoy. I often lose track of time simply "playing with wood", discovering grain patterns and bringing out the natural beauty hidden within each piece.

Every board that leaves my workshop has been carefully considered and individually crafted. I understand timber, how it moves, how it behaves and how to work with it to create pieces that are both beautiful and practical.

Wind Dancer is not a factory. We do not mass produce products or import boards from overseas. Every piece is handcrafted in Brisbane using carefully selected Australian hardwoods and over four decades of experience working with timber.

My aim has always been simple:

To create pieces that people are proud to own.

Boards that become part of family gatherings, weekend barbeques, celebrations and everyday moments.

Boards that are not only functional but are built to last and be enjoyed for many years to come.

We not only do boards but also an array of kitchen and personal items, all laser or engraved to make it that much more special.

There is something incredibly rewarding about taking a rough piece of timber and turning it into something that may one day become part of another family's story.

Thank you for supporting Australian made craftsmanship and allowing me to continue doing something I genuinely love.

I hope you enjoy your Wind Dancer piece as much as I enjoy creating it.
