Successful completion of this course will not only provide you with more confidence on a sailing boat but also provide you with the skills to join any crew of any race or cruising boat here or overseas. It also gives your full accreditation for a NSW Maritime approved power boat licence. It will teach you all the basics of sailing and boating and from this course, you can step up to Inshore Skipper and more .. This course is taught aboard our Catalina 42'. Successful completion of this course will provide you with the basic skills to skipper your own yacht on sheltered waters and on short coastal passages in daylight hours and be in charge of a watch on extended coastal passages, day or night. It covers navigation, preparing your vessel for sea, calculating tides and taking command of a vessel on enclosed waters with each student participating in pilotage, the organisation of the watches, and passage planning. Each student is required to take command of the vessel. You will actually experience taking a yacht out to sea through a tidal channel, under an opening bridge and cross over a bar and enjoy a short coastal sail.
This course is for those with more experience and want to validate their experience with YA recognition. We are looking to bring out the Skipper qualities in the student and help them extend themselves as a Skipper to gain the knowledge and the confidence of sailing a vessel along a coast. Each student will take command of the yacht for a period of time during a coastal passage and will be expected to demonstrate his or her ability to command the crew and navigate between set co-ordinates. Learn skills that are essential should an emergency situation arise offshore. (There are some exemptions for people already holding certain marine qualifications & certificates). The Safety and Sea Survival Course was developed following the tragedies of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race. This course covers the important issues that can arise when offshore sailing. It is a YA requirement that 50% of the crew of a yacht competing in offshore Cat. 1 & 2 racing should hold this certificate. We not only teach racing crew but also blue water cruisers and sailors with an overall interest in the sport. |
